Project A – 500th Anniversary of the Hare Why is the whole town of Nürnberg talking about the hare? The answer is simple, Albrecht Dürer’s small hare will be 500 years old and his hometown, Nürnberg, is holding a birthday party for him on August the 9th and 10th, 2002. An enormous picture of the hare can be seen from afar at the Ölberg (a well-known area of Nürnberg) where it welcomes its visitors. On market squares and streets of Nürnberg artists are devoting themselves to the topic of the “hare” in various forms. Unfortunately, the “little hare” has to celebrate its birthday in the safe cellar* of Vienna’s “Albertina”. It is too valuable, fragile and so unique that it is strictly forbidden for him to travel. In 1971, the year that celebrated Albrecht Dürer’s birth (b.1471), the hare was also absent, his last journey being over 50 years ago to Paris (1950). Exhibitions are being held about Dürer himself, Nürnberg City and the world in the year 1502. There are further exhibitions about Conrad Celtis, the artist’s friend and mentor, and also modern hare adaptations of the 20th century. ..... |
